Emotion regulation is receiving an unprecedented amount of focused scientific research. Somatic psychology methods have emerged at the same time, providing therapeutic approaches focused on bodily experiences and acknowledging the importance of examining and supporting holistic practices. Somatic psychology and somatic psychotherapy practices support holistic forms of emotion regulation. The original meaning of psychology comes from the Ancient Greek word psyche, meaning “breath, soul, and mind.” Somatic psychology then, literally translates to “the study of body, breath, soul, and mind,” forming a holistic approach to analysis and therapy, as well as valuable tools for somatic self-regulation.
